  • 28:32 game, how does moving king back not make you auto lose? Cause after rook takes, it’s checkmate making g pawn the only available move. Am I missing something? Update: I think endgame is rook sacrifice check white king. Can’t take back with pawn because of potential check from rook h1 to h3. Can’t take with king cause of queen to f1 check into mate so they have to take with their queen.

  • Has always looked up like that? I was watching a stream (I'm fairly new to his) where he said he looks up cuz he literally see a board and pieces on the ceiling just like they animate in Queens Gambit and frankly I don't believe him yet lol. Anyone watching him since before Queens Gambit came out, happen to know how long he's been looking up? I suspect it's a habit and has to do with chess I just would think closed eyes would be easier than looking up... Why do you have to look anywhere specific just to visualize something... Eyes closed seems most logical... Everyone's different tho I'm NOT saying it's impossible. Thanks if anyone knows.

    J CJ C4 ай мурун
    • @coldfire774 oh really like who????? I've never seen anyone do it before the way Hikaru does... Thanks for the opinion but I'm also still waiting for an answer to my question... Guess I'll just look up when Queens Gambit came out and looks through his past streams... I bet I'll find a correlation. Sure I could see how it's easier to visualize in empty space than backgrounds, but isn't it even easier to visualize ON the board your trying to visualize in the first place? Also looking up you still see stuff, that's why I said why doesn't he close his eyes (to have empty space to visualize in) ?

      J CJ C4 ай мурун
    • It's a common habit amongst a few gms actually which is why the maker's of 'the Queen's Gambit' put that in there. For some people it's easier to visualize in empty space

  • As an example of how absurd Hikaru is: at 4:44, the choice was between Kb5 and a5, as those are the only two moves which make any sense whatsoever in the position. Kb5 Kd5 Kb6 c4 a5 c3 a6 c2 a7 c1Q a8Q+ was what I initially saw and made me think that line was potentially draw-able for white, and as white starts out down a pawn, it seemed like a good result to me. But just as I finished calculating all that, Hikaru played a5 without even a moment of thought, and it's correct bc after a5 ba Kc5 a4 d6 a3 d7 a2 d8Q a1Q white has Qh8+ winning the queen on a1. And none of that is aprticularly difficult to see or calculate at all. But that fact that he either 1) calculated both those lines in under 5 seconds or 2) near immediately intuitively understood that a5 ba Kc5 was winning while Kb5 Kd5 Kb6 was not, is just ridiculous
