  • This modern music really drives me up the wall....It all sounds like the same three artists are making ALL the music today.....Over embellished autotuned vocals......Kill me now

  • You are being very graceful to these songs. I Find them like annoying whinny extended TV commercials with a lack of creative; just throwing sound bites against the wall that reek of novelty and inane substance. The bar is so low that any interesting chord or movement makes Rick give it a positive spin.

  • I find it interesting that u refer to the relative minor as chord vi and not chord i - when the tonal centre is on the minor. (If that makes sense) is it perhaps because u are being traditional in the classical sense and would only refer to a minor chord i - when the 7th note in the key is sharp? (Harmonic minor key area) or perhaps just for the sake of simplicity? I enjoy these videos, I also am impressed when I hear unique ideas in hyper famous popular music.

  • Kind of a surprise that #1 and #2 are not uptempo, and Driver’s License is not a ballad - or is it. The singer is quite good, too. She gives us lots of feeling. I think the slower tempos are result of us all being in lock down, and just chilling with our music listening. And Billie & Fineas’ new one, wow. And, thank you for breaking down the changes.

  • Uplifting songs with minor chords are my thing! Rick, I remember back in 2004-2006 (when a I was in my late childhood, early teenager years) there were many songs like that; pop, rock songs that were very catchy, sometimes energetic, or relaxing slow songs, even electronic music and with minor chords, I really loved that. Just take a look into the hits from that era.

  • I really think you should deduct points for sameness/lack of originality. Most of these songs sounded more or less the same. A top 10 in the 80s or 90s would have radical differences like comparing Def Leppard to Cheryl Crow to Michael Jackson. This stuff (with one or two exceptions) is all the same.

  • Apart from the first song, the rest is just more of the same repetitive, simplistic, self-similar, recursive, unmelodic CRAP of the past 20 years that has caused me to despair as to how "pop"ular music will ever recover from this malaise -- and I don't give a flying f*** how well-produced they are!

  • Pretty simplistic both in chord progressions and production (with the exception of creepy girl and her brother good production). What's up with going up and down the neck playing bar chords? Try playing a barred C position a half step higher instead of the E and A versions of guitar chords? Did I hear a diminished? Wow! Pop music!? I agree that the mastering is way too hot on some tunes. Isn't there some standard so we don't have to keep playing with levels for the listener? All in all I enjoy the concept of your reviewing pop. In all seriousness, I enjoyed your helping non musicians understand just how easy musicians with trained ears can pick apart songs on the fly. For me, it's too simple and boring. You did a great job trying to enjoy it. Again, play guitar like a real guitar player and stop being a bar chord player? How 'bout a Bm7 in starting from the second fret with your middle finger on low B? Also, do you always have to ring a low G every time you play C? What are you some kind of folk/country guy now!? lol Gotta give you flack for something. Best wishes!

Also, I've always thought that Billie Eilish could have been a bit more successful if she never got that angsty persona and just was a more...normal... singer. Because her voice is damn gorgeous, but she wastes it a bit by taking this angsty persona that drives a lot of people off.
